Notre semaine dernière ensemble...

Our last week together...

This week may present more of our non-functioning students to the fore. It is sad to see these students not completing work and just "hoping" what has not worked for them in the past... will work this time...
BUT, what is rewarding to see is that most of the students, in fact overwhelmingly most of the students, have changed it up and are succeeding!   And that is why we are here!

II____________________________________________________

If students are still taking their time getting back to class and racking up the tardies, get them in to us sooner than later so we can let them know the consequence.   If we haven't seen them and they're not sent until after acquiring more that 2 days of absence as well as multiple tardies, it is difficult to tell them to change without putting them back into the classroom.    I'll give the students a chance if they are performing and have the right attitude.   It could be a long week!

Give all students a reminder on Monday!

III____________________________________________________

ALL books are to be returned to you and you have accounted for them.  If they are missing we need to let the book room know "who" is responsible, meaning what student you checked out the book to... so we can charge them.  All books are to be checked into the office by Friday afternoon.

IV____________________________________________________

Keys must be returned on Friday.

V____________________________________________________

Grades: We need the grades inputted by the end of Friday.  After Friday, everyone is gone.  Please plan ahead.

VI____________________________________________________

I have enjoyed working with all of you this summer and I hope it has been pleasant for you as well!  I wish you all a restful remainder of the summer and a great school year.

We are now into Week 5/6 or... .666666... % complete!

Welcome to the 5th week of Summer School!
Elevate Math and Science have finished their program and our overall student numbers have dropped about 90 students...

II______________________________________________________________________________
If any of you have post-12th graders in your classes, can you let me/Sylvia know so we can see where they stand in regards to graduation this summer?   Graduation will be held August 7th at GHS, Building TBD.  More later...

III______________________________________________________________________________
We will be having an Earthquake drill this Wednesday at 12:15 (right after lunch).
I or someone else will get on the intercom and announce "...the earthquake has begun"!
All students and teachers are to find cover under desks etc.
After 2 min. (after shaking has ended) you are to go with your class to your evacuation site. (we will have the gates ready for you this time).
Once the "All Clear" signal has been sounded, return to your class and continue the learning process.

IV______________________________________________________________________________
Remind your students that Friday is not a holiday for the Garlic Festival.  An absence, is an absence and will be recorded as such.

V_______________________________________________________________________________
There are still some stragglers into classrooms after break.  If you are giving them tardies let the office know who are racking up the numbers so we can have a special talk with them.

VI______________________________________________________________________________
Have a great week everyone!

Traffic played havoc with times last week so make sure the students tell their parents that it "might" happen again!

III

Monday will be similar to the first day of the first semester, EXCEPT!  we have had practice and should be better prepared.   Everyone's rosters will be full of students and by Tuesday or Wednesday we should have a more realistic idea of our class sizes... so hang in there!

IV

Everyone should have the supplies they ordered by now, let us know if we missed you somehow!

V

Last and certainly not least, make sure you have turned in your first semester grades to Sylvia in the Library.  We will input them as soon as we get the avenue to take from the District Office.  Thank you!

VI

And we say goodbye to Robyn Denega as she has completed her half of the team of Denega and Barone!  And so, we give Vicki Barone a hardy hello and welcome into our midst!  Hello Vicki!

Third (and last) Week of 1st Semester

I hope your 4th was wonderful with family and friends!

II

Now back at it!

This is the last week of the first semester.  It will culminate into a grade for the student.  You all have a slight twist on the last day or so of the semester with a midterm final, etc. but we do need to look out for the tail wagging the dog.   By this, I mean that "last day kick-back" and "not too much to do" tends to make the previous school days, not so important either... especially if a student is released for missing too much school...  If you have your last "graded" work before the last day of school... don't be surprised at the attendance...  So, bell to bell, beginning to end, thank you!

III

Make sure you get your grades into Sylvia by Monday morning, July 13th.  If you have them later Friday afternoon, that would be even better of course.  We will be inputting the grades as soon as we are able to get them from you.   We will be giving you a "report card" for you to fill out and stuff in an envelope.  I believe we have you address the envelopes as well (we did it this way for years, but I will see what DO expectations are on this).

IV

Supplies have been ordered (finally) it took a bit to get the PO number...  so we should have delivery by Monday or Tuesday.

V

Tuesday night at 6:30 July, 7th Elevate will be holding its Family College Night program in the Theater.

VI

The Fire Drill last week was a bit (to say the least) not too good...  Not your fault, you did what you were suppose to do.    Two of four gates locked didn't help.   We will clean this up next semester when we have our earthquake drill.  There won't be an alarm, but we will let you know the day and time and get on the loudspeaker to announce the "...shaking goin' on."   (And we will make sure the gates are unlocked from here on out)

VII

Elevate Math will be having a field trip to UCSC this Wednesday and will be picking up their sack lunch at the Student Center Cafe right before they board the bus--returning at 5:30 -6:00 pm

The Week of Week II

Hello all,
Week two will be a shorter week of course with Independence Day on the horizon.  We will have no school on Friday the 3rd in commemoration.

Supplies:
I have only received one order and a couple requests with a twist from teachers for supplies.  I asked on the last Blog for you to send me and/or Sheri Lynch an email with what you want via the on-line Palace Arts catalog.  It will be a day or two turn-around.

Attendance:
Well, we are closer to the attendance being worked out but there are still a couple bugs in the system...  It looks like some of us have period attendance, but others have only day by day...

So.... Please email me so that I can know who has which format in ABI!    If you only have the day by day, please keep a separate tally of tardies so that we can keep track and then notify students when they are near the absence cutoff.  In order to do this...   please email Sylvia your tardies and periods absent (and who the student is of course...) by the end of Monday... we need last week's running totals.  Thank you!

And to that point.  The first day of school, Friday the 19th I am not going to count as an absence. There were quite a few students/parents who did not receive notification that school started on Friday the 19th via a sign-up note or were given wrong information.

There are three students who were given "special dispensation" either from me or the District to be able to miss more than 2 days and student and teachers are notified of this.  Other than the students with the special dispensation, all other students will be held to the "you only get two absences per semester" rule starting last Monday the 22nd.   Hopefully this makes sense...

Apex and Elevate have a slightly different process and we are keeping tabs on these students.

Events, of sort...
We will be having a fire drill this week, Thursday afternoon at 12:15 pm
... So once we all get back from lunch, and you have taken roll and know who that all are present...  we will let er' rip!   So, 12:15 pm Thursday July 2nd will be a fire drill.

Is the use of the Library Computer Lab going okay? Remember to sign in ahead of time so there aren't any

uncomfortable moments....

Field Trips
We will have field trips for two programs this summer: Elevate as well as the Migrant Ed --PASS program.   So everyone else, make sure none of your students try to stowaway....

Elevate Math:  (2 classes) July 8th (Wednesday after next)
UC Santa Cruz
Pick up @ Gilroy HS: 12pm
Tour time @ Monterey Bay: 2pm
Pick up @ Monterey Bay: 4:30pm

will be having some Field trips this summer as well.  More particulars later...

Summer School Week ONE

Well, one day down for most of us and a few more to go!

This week we welcome the Silicon Valley Education Foundation's ELEVATE Math and Science Program with the addition of two math classes and one science.

Gabriela Sarrato and Wonderly Peralta will be teaching math in rooms C9 and B1 respectively and Josh Small will be teaching science in BE3.  We welcome them and the foundation into the summer fold.

***************************************

I will add a video or thought or pod cast here and there that I bump into that may or may not be of interest to you but if you have time... view, read and listen when you can and if we bump into each other you can let me know what you think.  Or comment on the blog... I like new, somewhat controversial thinking and not just out of the box but sometimes just precariously edgy thinking... say, on the edge of the box. Technology, education, brain science, new world issues, thoughts and problems....

So, to that point... here is an interesting podcast I listened to this morning on the WNYU's "NOTE TO SELF" podcast...  "The Bi-literate Brain."
Question(s)... why does digital reading seem so different then paper reading to a lot of us?  And...  should we be concerned or is it just us "old fogies" that have the problem...

***************************************

Okay, back to Summer School...

Technology:
I have a request for Elmo's (or need to make work)...  Room B-14, B-17, BE-4 and C-9... anyone else?   Computer needs to be hooked up in B-17 as well.  (more?)

Maintenance:
AC in B-16 is not working (more?)

Supplies:
There is paper in the library to get you going.  grab a couple reams.  I was instructed to have you look online with Palace Arts,  (I believe this is the site... I'm going to double check on Monday) to see what your needs are to order up to $50.00 per teacher.  If you are close but over, let me know so we can discuss.   Write out a list with item number, quantity and price and send an email to Sheri Lynch at:  sheri.lynch@gilroyunified.org and you should receive your order within a couple days.

***************************************
We will be generating a phone list and a "rules" list as I related to the students on Friday.  Please do as much in-class discipline before you send a student to the office.   I may give them the "one-on-one" talk once, depending on the egregiousness of the offence before I suspend.  And the student may just sit out for a time to get their priorities straight!

***************************************
That is all for now...    I'm sure I forgot something, so if you know this or have a question anyway, let me know!  Thanks, Greg
